چکیده

We study the stability of non-Abelian semi-local vortices based on an N = 2 supersymmetric H = SU(Nc)×U(1)/ZNc ∼ U(Nc) gauge theory with an arbitrary number of flavors (Nf > Nc) in the fundamental representation, when certain N = 1 mass terms are present, making the vortex solutions no longer BPS-saturated. Local (ANO-like) vortices are found to be stable against fluctuations in the transverse directions. Strong evidence is found that the ANO-like vortices are actually the true minima. In other words, the semi-local moduli, which are present in the BPS limit, disappear in our non-BPS system, leaving the vortex with the orientational moduli CPNc−1 only. We discuss the implications of this fact on the system in which the U(Nc) model arises as the low-energy approximation of an underlying e.g. G = SU(Nc + 1) gauge theory.

Statistical Mechanics of Vortices from D-branes and T-duality

We propose a novel and simple method to compute the partition function of statistical mechanics of local and semi-local BPS vortices in the Abelian-Higgs model and its non-Abelian extension on a torus. We use a D-brane realization of the vortices and T-duality relation to domain walls. We there use a special limit where domain walls reduce to gas of hard (soft) one-dimensional rods for Abelian ...

Non-Abelian Strings in High Density QCD: Zero Modes and Interactions

The most fundamental strings in high density color superconductivity are the non-Abelian semi-superfluid strings which have color gauge flux tube but behave as superfluid vortices in the energetic point of view. We show that in addition to the usual translational zero modes, these vortices have normalizable orientational zero modes in the internal space, associated with the color-flavor locking...

Static Interactions of non-Abelian Vortices

Interactions between non-BPS non-Abelian vortices are studied in non-Abelian U(1) × SU(N) extensions of the Abelian-Higgs model in four dimensions. The distinctive feature of a non-Abelian vortex is the presence of an internal CPN−1 space of orientational degrees of freedom. For fine-tuned values of the couplings, the vortices are BPS and there is no net force between two static parallel vortic...

Embedded Vortices

We present a discussion of embedded vortices in general Yang-Mills theories. The origin of a family structure of solutions is shown to be group theoretic in nature and a procedure for its determination is developed. Vortex stability can be quantified into three types: Abelian topological stability, non-Abelian topological stability, and dynamical stability; we relate these to the family structu...

Fractional Vortices and Lumps

We study what might be called fractional vortices, vortex configurations with the minimum winding from the viewpoint of their topological stability, but which are characterized by various notable substructures in the transverse energy distribution. The fractional vortices occur in diverse Abelian or non-Abelian generalizations of the Higgs model. The global and local features characterizing the...
